~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was nothing Aziraphale wanted less than to return to Heaven.
Nothing more torturous he could imagine than spear-heading The Great Plan.
Well, almost nothing.
And that almost was the exact reason he stood here, coffee in hand, in the elevator Up with the Metatron.
Because what he wanted least , what would torture him most , was for Crowley to suffer. To be erased from the Book of Life. How could he bare to watch that come to pass? To be the cause of it?
“We could've been… us”
But they couldn't, couldn't they? It was Someone's cruel joke, he was sure. To watch them dance around each other, too terrified to say what mattered most until they had no more time to say it.
And he was trying to make the best out of a bad situation, inviting Crowley to come with him. But of course Crowley didn't understand why he was asking it, why he had agreed to what he did. Because Aziraphale didn't fully explain anything.
The echoes of those moments, that kiss, would haunt Aziraphale for the rest of time.
The elevator dinged. He wasn't ready for this. He never would be.
But there was one thing that terrified him more.
So he squared his shoulders, and stepped through the doors and onto the cold tile floor of Heaven.
I love you more than anything.
